Alpaca was known as the Gold of the Incas and treasured by the Inca Royal Family for its strength, lustre, and buttery softness. Originally from the Andes, Alpaca wool is hollow, so fleeces are uniquely light and warm. And with no lanolin and no 'prickle' it's ideal for babies and sensitive skin. Alpaca is pure luxury, especially when the wool comes from extremely fine-haired baby animals as this does.
Alpacs are not bred or killed for their fur. The fur is mainly from baby Alpacas - or "cria" - which have died of natural causes. The weaker animals often perish in the hard Andean winter. Alpacas can live for 20 years, promising a lifetime of shearing potential of far greater value than a single pelt.
